Where the vineyards are located
Our 25 hectares of vineyards can be found on two mountains; on
the hillsides of the Bisamberg in the
southerly and southeastern slopes, including the renowned sections
of Herrenholz, Jungenberg, Gabrissen, Rothen, Breiten, and Wiesthalen.
The soil here consists primarily of sandy, calcium-rich loam.
And also on the other side of the Danube, the Nussberg,
the best known Viennese wine-growing mountain. Here, for several
years now, we have leased vineyards of six vine-hectares, rooted
in soil of muschelkalk-weathered stone, which lends the wine an
especially earthy tone.

Our work in the vineyard
Vine cultivation in our
vineyards is particularly conservation-oriented this maintains
the quality of the grapes and the consistency of the ground soils.
We do not use mineral fertilizers. The necessary humus is provided
by a natural, organic fertilization
system with a plant mixture that is specially adapted to dry areas.
The clearing between the rows of vines is maintained strictly
by hand. We do not use even the gentlest of herbicides.
A
great deal of labor is invested in the vineyards, even during
the vegetation period. In nearly every
vineyard, the outgrowths late-ripening side branches
are cut away from the vine zone, to minimize foliage and subsequent
shading of the grapes.
In August, leaves are removed
from the vine zone and the grape yield is lowered;
thus we achieve more highly concentrated and valuable wines. Furthermore,
the plants are less likely to be affected by fungi and the grapes
stay healthier.
In autumn the most important
and labor-intensive time begins: the picking of the grapes. Solid
organization and a highly motivated team
make the often long and strenuous days much more bearable. For
this, we extend a special thanks to
our entire staff.
