Wiener gemischter Satz

All of Vienna in one wine: Fritz Wieninger helped push the Wiener Gemischter Satz into the limelight in recent years. This began with the Nußberg Alte Reben 1999. Wieninger is highly successful with these authentic terroir wines of the highest quality – and not only in his homeland, but also around the world.

“Especially close to my heart is the Wiener Gemischte Satz. This is a Viennesse classic that had been nearly forgotten.”

The Wiener Gemischte Satz is the most traditional of Viennese wine-growing specialties. Not only is it typical for region, soil and micro-climate, but it is also a symbol and reflection of Viennese culture. For this authentic terroir wine, vines from different grape varieties are grown together in one vineyard, with each one bringing its specific character to the wine. As a result, the wine is especially complex, thanks to its most distinctive feature - the grapes grow together, and are harvested and processed together. This should not be confused with a Cuvée, which is made up of more than one grape variety also, but each variety is grown, harvested and vinified individually before the winemaker blends them just shortly before bottle filling.

The history: Traditionally, Viennese vintners planted up to 15 different grape varieties in one vineyard! The main advantage: this provided balance to the variations in quality and quantity of the vintage. In the unique aroma and flavour composition, the exotic expression of the highly ripe varieties is completed so wonderfully by the freshness and raciness of the late ripening grapes.

Wieninger vinifies two categories: The classic Wiener Gemischte Satz and the full-bodied Wiener Gemischter Satz with site designation. A meticulous, strict list of criteria guarantees the quality and authenticity of the Wiener Gemischter Satz.
